The Rap Sheet - GAW 4/22/2K6
The Rap Sheet from the Mad Conservative
Great American Wrestling
4/22/2K6 Maroa, IL

It's the second annual Freedom Cup tournament!

Well I'm trying to whittle down the backlog of prior shows that I got too busy and undermotivated to finish. Most of this was written up a long time ago but I never finished it up. Credit my job getting so busy I just wanted to crash at home and NOT do any work--including writing, except for the newspaper I write columns for. Be sure to read the verdict at the end, because there's a point to be made about this period of time where the show occurred.

Right before the show even starts, Brian Ealey attacks Dickie Williams who doesn't even have his hardcore belt with him. Williams has him in a choke and gives him a wedgie. They brawl in the front row, Ealey chairshots Williams, jawbreaker on the chair, and he's trying to make him bleed! Ealey misses a chairshot and hits the post. Ealey throws Williams into the stairs, and hits a DDT on the chair off the stairs! And Williams is cut up. Ealey pulls out a cheese grater and tears up Williams face. Okay I don't wanna see anything more, talk about trying to disfigure someone! Williams grabs him by the chest, tries to use a chair but gets it kicked in his face for two. Ealey chairshots Williams repeatedly and the ref stops it. Ealey gets the hardcore title in an unofficial match. Sick.

They introduce the "greatest technical wrestler" ever, George Jr. Ummm...unless he was putting on five star matches on a regular basis that I don't know about, I call that statement BS. Chris Lee thinks he's slimmed down a couple pounds. George was in the area and wanted to check out a show.

Jessie Clark comes out, and calls Petey. He wants him to assist in winning back the tag titles. Petey says he can't do it, he wants a change to persue singles challenges. So Jessie says he's got another partner and it's Sly! He's mocked that he's tiny, but Sly says he can kick everyone's butt in the locker room. Sly says Petey better win the tournament, Sly says they'll win the tag belts back and have fun doing it. The NGW & GAW Tag Champs come out, Morton Von Prose & Black Dragon. MVP says there's a New Era in GAW and you're looking at them. Now JC Michaels & John Scott come out with Miss Black. JC claims they're the power, the first faction and always be the only faction, and who the heck are New Era? The insults are flying, JC says Petey is smart for seperating from Jessie & Sly because they'll make them lose. Andy Roberts and Gavin Alexander come out to "don't worry be happy". Ugh. Andy goes into some touchy-touchy-feely-feely nonsense about getting a title shot in the future. Now Ben Taylor comes out and says he's sick of this crap, all them guys drove Deacon Hobbs out of the sport and resign because of all the BS. Well Hobbs withdrew from everything, so it's not just GAW. Taylor says it's a four team tag match for the titles, and he'll have his eye on everyone. And now the Mississippi Madman comes out. Taylor says he asked for this time so he gets it. Madman complains about KC putting a restraining order on him which is why he's been gone the past two shows. Madman wants KC now, Taylor says he's not here, but if he doesn't get here tonight he'll be stripped.

Live from the Old Grade School in Maroa, IL. Your hosts are Chris Lee and George "The Animal" Jr. Due to so many of the first round winners of 16 last year not being able to show up for the second round, they had to literally start the tournament over with 8. This year, it's just eight men in the tourney.

Central States Championship
(c)Apriq Laveq w/ Kaval vs. Jewels Vega w/ Dennis Devine - I didn't think Vega was gonna be in the match here. Vega pounds away, Apriq misses an elbow, standing moonsault Vega gets two. Apriq stomps away as Kaval grabs at Vega but Devine pulls him out. Spinning neckbreaker gets two. Suplex, side suplex gets Apriq two. Vega misses a flip cover and Apriq kicks him down, splash in the corner, a second one meets a BOOT. Vega with a shoulder takedown gets two. And Vega botches a suplex for two. Ugh. Apriq bails, Vega chases, fight on the floor, Devine hops on the apron, Kaval dropkicks Vega but that only gets two. Kaval on the apron, Devine in to attack Apriq but the referee catches him and it's a DQ. Brawl after the match, Vega takes Apriq out, Kaval and Devine slug away, but Kaval drives the knees and security has to jump in. Vega soon jumps in the brawl and that ref is just getting smothered! Pull apart, Devine wants more but everyone flees. Some botched spots made this not so great.

GAW & NGW Tag Champs New Era - Morton Von Prose & Black Dragon vs. Truly Everything - JC Michaels & John Scott vs. Sly & Jesse Clark vs. Anger Management - Andy Roberts & Gavin Alexander - Apparently anyone can be a Clark relative these days. NO WINNER: Double KO -> 14:55 mins. ****

Petey Clark is the winner of the 2006 Freedom Cup Tournament! The crowd cusses out the result, and Ben Taylor decides it's gonna be a triple threat instead of Petey getting the BYE to the trophy. Grrrrr...changing the rules in the middle of the game. George Jr. has to split, so Eric Ruffington takes over. A fan asks me why am I not a commentator at GAW. Ask the GAW owners about it, not me. I know there's been someone opposing the idea.

Sinister Six-Way - Lucha Libre Rules

WINNER: Mississippi Madman countout -> 19:05 mins. ***

The Verdict: This turned out to be one of the better shows, where the good talent stood out, and the bad talent had their roles minimalized. The influx of NGW talent really helped fill the void that NMW left during that ill-advised embargo imposed by WQLZ during this period, which demonstrated how much of a joke it was that only hurt NMW with booking opportunities reduced for its roster. And looking back, I certainly endured a LOT OF HEAT for arguing against it. In the long run, guess what...I WAS RIGHT! Lesson be learned, taking a stand is hazardous but firm principles usually prevail. This being no exception.

Thumbs up.
