The Rap Sheet - from the Mad Conservative
Midwestern States Pro Wrestling - Hammerlock Pro Wrestling
1/19/2K7 Stanford, IL
Mad dashing to a show after work is rather taxing...
Another new fed, though it's supposedly an affiliate of another fed, it seems like Hammerlock is its own separate entity that's contracted to have MSPW championships defended on its shows--like how TNA is contracted to use NWA World titles. Stanford, IL is a little town between Bloomington and Peoria, and the venue in which the show took place was what used to be a church. It has been decommissioned and been converted into a reception hall with the owners living downstairs. It's now a sort of bar & grill place on one side. Attendance though was rather low at 55-60 people, really disappointing when considering who was in the lineup. Latecomers were showing up at 7pm, and the show started a bit late. Apparently officials forgot to bring their ring bell, so I went to fetch mine. Sound was horrible in that place, couldn't hear much of anything with voices bouncing all over the walls.
The ring announcer whom I did not catch his name, attempts to run through the lineup but is quickly interrupted by Johnny Kay who shoves him away. He says his segment is called the Ace's Lounge and something went down that he's not happy with. He calls out Drake. Drake wants to fight Diego Corleone. Johnny Kay says Diego is NOT here tonight. Johnny notes that Drake looks angry, but he's mad that he's not entered into the heavyweight title tournament and he's the "greatest wrestler the company has ever seen". Yeah, cue the ultra-generic self-promo. Drake says he's full of crap and wants to fight him. Well here comes Doug Devore, and he asks when the inmates started running the asylum. This isn't his show, he doesn't make demands, he's gonna smack him if he doesn't quit being an idiot, and as of 3:45pm he's the new owner of Hammerlock and he better get to a neutral corner until he's done talking. Wow. Doug Devore buys a wrestling company just in its infancy. He says HPW is about the fans, he names who the fans have been wanting, he names what the fans wanted as a main event, but what HPW doesn't have is a champion of their own. The next event there will be tournament for the HPW title. Devore says there will be a six-man tag where the winner will be entered into the tournament.
Stumpy vs. Gilbert Lewis w/ Dewey Dawson & Omega Mu - Well a carryover from NGW! The usual nerd silliness ensues with shoving, stalling, butt slapping and bareback riding. Stumpy drops Gilbert for snake eyes, elbow gets one. Stumpy with a choke and boot wipe, then sits on him. Lewis tries some clotheslines but can't knock him down, a BOOT does the trick. Lewis tries a takedown but crashes to the mat, Stumpy powerslams him, walks on it, goes up, legdrop from the second rope and that gets the pin. That foot actually landed below Lewis's shoulder and it HURT! Squash.
WINNER: Stumpy pin -> 6:45 mins. *½
A little editorial comment before the next match. Conner Riley and Chuck Ray were supposed to wrestle Nemesis & Max Power in the next match, but for some reason Nemesis & Max Power backed out of the match. The 3CW guys claimed they couldn't go because of car trouble, as if they couldn't get a ride from someone else. But why would you send an email via Myspace blowing them off and say the booking is belittling and insulting if its just transportation trouble? You get a major opportunity that you haven't had in a long time to wrestle in front of Chicago talent in hopes to get your stock raised then blow it off. I just do not understand it. But it seems squandering opportunities was a regular practice, and none of it makes any sense and I’m not going to continue trying to figure out the mindset.
Drake, Conner Riley & Chuck Ray vs. Jesse Clark, Black Dragon & Johnny Kay - Things were not clear on how this match was supposed to work, you'll see why in a minute. Conner and Jesse start, Conner hip tosses him for two. Tag Chuck, elbow, double clothesline has no effect, snap mare and headbutt by Chuck. Jesse with a LOW BLOW, tags Kay who hits a side elbow for two. He chokes him on the ropes, tags Dragon. Dragon with a legdrop gets two, tag Kay. Knee strikes to the back, tag Jesse. Jesse with a DDT gets two, tag Kay, top rope clothesline gets two but Black Dragon breaks up the pin? Dragon with a LOW BLOW, leglock, and Kay breaks it up. Who's team are you on Johnny? There's dissention among the heels. Chuck Ray fires back on Dragon, FLATLINER! Tag Drake and Jesse...and everyone jumps in the ring for a full scale riot, Chuck and Conner dump Jesse and Dragon, Kay bumps into Chuck Ray, atomic drop, Drake with a SPEAR! Conner with a flying elbow off the top, Dragon pulls Chuck out, Drake covers while everyone's occupied and gets the pin. Wasn't a six-corner match but Drake gets to advance to the tournament apparently.
WINNERS: Drake, Conner Riley & Chuck Ray pin -> 6:25 mins. *
Blake Steel w/ Nikki Knight & Rizz vs. Dewey Dawson w/ Gilbert Lewis & Omega Mu - Hmmm...Blake's got a neon green boa, and Nikki is sporting a matching boa neon-green robe. Rizz is some new guy acting as bodyguard for the girl. Some group of guys are calling her a crack whore...okay that's wrong. Nikki is trying to say something but the crowd drowns her out. The match starts and there's a lot of stalling and posing. Blake spits at him, Dewey spits at him back, then pokes him in the nose. Steel yanks on his arm though and works it over, dragging him to wrap around the post. Steel with a crossarm breaker, Blake whips him across but Dewey hits a clothesline. Steel knees him in the arm, sits on him against the ropes, but dodges a charge and they trade chops. Dewey with the death valley driver, back drop, clothesline, dropkick, slam, Dewey takes a while to interact with the crowd then proceeds to go up, but Nikki grabs his foot. Dewey scares her off, goes up again and hits a moonsault. But Rizz proceeds to yank the ref out of the ring...where's the DQ? Dewey wants a piece of Rizz and jumps out after him body tackling Rizz and Lewis! Blake shoves him into the post however, locks in a sort of reverse full nelson with his feet on the ropes and Dewey taps. Bad call by the ref. Lewis should had pushed Blake's feet off.
WINNER: Blake Steel submission -> 10:45 mins. **
Furious Five-Way Match
Brandon Blaze vs. Andy Roberts vs. Brett Gakiya vs. Petey Clark vs. MSPW Heritage Champ Mike Flannery - This is NON-title. The ring announcer says every show will have a four or five way match as a main attraction. Brett and Mike start. Armwringers to start, Brett with a suicide whisper in the wind onto Blaze, Roberts & Clark goofing off outside. Brett with a chop on someone, Mike chops someone else, Andy Roberts is pushed in, side elbow by Mike, hip toss, spinebuster for two. Tag Brett, he tries a springboard move...but SLIPS! Andy Roberts takes advantage of the error, suplexing Brett for two. Andy with a choke, flying clothesline, elbow gets two. "Flower Power" chant erupts over Andy's ring attire, heh. Andy rams Brett into Blaze's boot for two. Blaze with a side slam, whip, crossbody by Brett gets one. Blaze with a suplex for two. Tag Petey. Suplex into the ropes...yeek. Brett with a slap, enzuigiri, flying headscissors. Petey with a short clothesline and tags Andy who pounds him down, but Brett with a wheelbarrow elbow and a trip for two. Andy flips Brett, SUPERKICK gets two! Tag Petey, tag Mike, Flannery bashes heads together, dumps the others out, Brett in wht a dropkick and tornado DDT, Blaze nails Brett, Blaze drops Brett in a death valley driver from the top, but Flannery grabs Blaze for the sliced bread #2 and gets the pin.
WINNER: Mike Flannery pin -> 8:50 mins. ***¾
Cherry Malone w/ The Mastermind vs. Eric Ruffington - Who the heck is THAT guy? Cherry tries to say something but she too is drowned out by the crowd, only thing I could get is Dennis Devine is out. Then the Mastermind says something but he too gets drowned out by the crowd. Cherry apparently is his protector as he takes over the wrestling world or something. I couldn't hear a thing. Ruffington acts like he doesn't want to wrestle a girl. Never stopped him before. Cherry slaps him, then tries a clothesline, Ruff trips her up, atomic drop, Cherry reverses the whip, Mastermind grabs, Cherry rollup gets one. LOW BLOW Cherry, kneelift, punt, bootwipe. Cherry tries a headscissors in the corner but Ruff gives her a piledriver instead. Mastermind on the apron getting the idiot ref's attention, then Blake Steel and his army of Andy Roberts & Rizz rush the ring to clobber Ruffington with a wrench, Cherry covers and gets the pin. Barf. Sorry, I just did not care for the ridiculous overbooking, and that ref is the worst one ever. Hardly a match here, it was a farce.
WINNER: Cherry Malone pin -> 3:05 mins. DUD
Cherry Malone gets a mike again and says she can defeat any man and thus she should be in the title tournament. Doug Devore comes out and says she may be one of the premeire lady wrestlers but she can't enter the tournament. Instead, he has a real opponent for Cherry next show, former TNA superstar Traci Brooks. Cherry seems shocked, then seems pleased with the idea. The frat boys behind me don't know who Traci is. The next song plays, and it's "Ready Steady Go" from Full Metal Alchemist!
XXXplicit Content - Dangerous Danny Scott & Bailey Mannix vs. Justin Dredd & "Axis" William Hatcher - The same ref is still in there and does not think much of my "Worst Ref Ever" sign, and the frat boys yell he should go back to chef school, I mean ref school...no he was right the first time cause he eats too much. Heh. Bailey is NOT HERE, apparently he got lost trying to find the venue and just walked in the door when the match was supposed to start. Ugh. Justin Dredd has the mike and wants a forfeit win. Danny Scott says no, he's gonna wrestle them both instead. So while Bailey is getting dressed to wrestle, Scott starts the match alone. DDS kicks the leg of Dredd, takedown and locks in a half crab. He lets go and shoulderblocks him toward Axis to tag. DDS chops him down, clothesline gets two. DDS with a suplex, kick in the corner, dropkick, clothesline gets one. Axis with a lariat, tag Dredd. Dredd with a sitdown armbar...and that looked like it hurt, that gets two. Axis with a legdrop across the arm and works it, Dredd with a springboard...and he SLIPS! He lands full force on DDS's arm...yikes! DDS is hurt. Dredd goes after that arm, DDS chops him with his good arm but Dredd kicks him. Axis in with the crossarm breaker, Dredd attempts a suplex but gets shoved off, DDS with a double clothesline on his foes and here comes Bailey! Tag Mannix, he clotheslines him both from the top, dropkicks, Axis gets tossed, DDS back in to assist with a double-team piledriver on Dredd and that gets the pin!
WINNERS: XXXPlicit Content pin -> 9:50 mins. ***
CJ Esparza vs. Metalhead Steve Stone - Mismatch! Stone shoves him about, drop toe hold, armdrag, slam and CJ bails in front of me. Stone with a baseball slide dropkick...yeek...they're almost in my lap! Stone with the LOUDEST CHOPS EVER on CJ! Oh my that kid is gonna have those welts for a long time. Stone puts him in, ten second suplex gets two. CJ with a poke and LOW BLOW, CJ with some forearms, Stone misses a charge and CJ rolls him up for two. CJ with a couple rollups, leading up to a tornado DDT for two. CJ goes up for the shooting star press...but MISSED! Stone with elbows and a spinning neckbreaker for two. Stone charges and wipes his boot across CJ's face! Stone with a powerslam gets two. CJ manages a jawbreaker, superkick gets two. CJ charges, but misses his target and Stone with the CLOTHESLINE FROM HECK gets the pin. Quite decent.
WINNER: Steve Stone pin -> 7:35 mins. ***½
MSPW Heavyweight Championship
MSPW Heavyweight & Light Heavyweight Champ Jason Hades vs. Silas Young w/ Valerie - Wow, Hades has the title belts of BOTH weight classes. Silas has Strangers by Journey playing as his music, and the frat boys sing along. Simon from American Idol would trash us in a heartbeat. Young of course runs his mouth, and calls the frat boys a bunch of pussies. That's about all I can hear as he's drowned out too, and one of them thinks about getting in the ring with him. Hades rams Young in a corner and he bails. Young gets a takedown, but Hades gets the headlock, dropkick, armbar takedown. Hades goes to the crossarm breaker, Young kicks him off, Hades with a wheelbarrow armdrag. The girl grabs at Hades but he hits the slingshot senton for two. Hades goes after the girl, but Young cuts him off. Young with kicks and a knee lift, suplex gets two. Young locks in a butterfly armbar, suplex attempt is blocked, Hades rollup is blocked, Hades springboards into Young for two. Monkey flip is blocked, Young knees him down, sits on him, side suplex gets two. And Young with the torture rack! Hades slips out, atomic drop by Hades but misses the dropkick. Young grabs the leg but gets an enzuigiri and the chops are flying! Hades with a backdrop, monkey flip, tornado flatliner by Hades gets two! Young yanks him down by the hair, Silas goes for the powerbomb, Hades tries to jump over, Silas tries to pull him back but gets snap sunset flipped down for the pin. Match of the night.
WINNER and STILL CHAMP: Jason Hades pin -> 12:50 mins. ****¼
The verdict: The parts of the show where it was pure wrestling were good, when the overbooking reared its ugly head things went downhill in a hurry. My preference it seems.
Thumbs mildly up.
