Chicago and downstate are two vastly different worlds…

Well after the brouhaha over the prior Hammerlock event that had the added hazard of driving in blizzard conditions, I arrive for this event to see how it goes without the Chicago folks in it. Chicago pretty much is a vastly different world from downstate and the guys up there are just not willing to work with downstaters very much. In the future it’s pretty much going to be one or two folks will be booked from Chicago on a case by case basis, where none of them will be in a position to hold the show hostage if they refuse to play and will be sent home instead. I rushed to get there about 6:30pm due to the surprise dark matches that there thrown in last show, but there were none of those this time. In fact, the show started about 20 minutes late.

Live from the church bar and grill in Stanford. They have someone new doing the ring announcing.

Aaron Matthews vs. Gavin Alexander – MISMATCH! Shove by Gavin, Aaron tries to pound him but gets clotheslined and PUNTED. Aaron chops him, shot to the knee, dropkick on the mat, legdrop guillotine. Gavin with a poke, avalanche, tree of woe kicks, PUNT, then it’s the Gunslinger for a slow two count! Gavin with a choke on the ropes and sits on him! Aaron attacks the leg, dropkick, moonsault gets a slow two count, Aaron with a superkick, frogsplash from the top follows and gets the pin. Gavin protests loudly he got his shoulder up, after the three count however. He grabs his kendo stick and swings at Matthews but he gets away.

WINNER: Aaron Matthews pin -> 5:45 mins. **

Doug Devore has some things to say, they found a good opponent for Diego Corleone in Harker Dirge. The next event there will be a tournament to create Hammerlock tag champs. Well if there’s gonna be a tourney, the obvious candidates to enter cannot. The Feature Presentation – Eric Ruffington and Blake Steel, are feuding with each other in HPW. Zero Gravity – Brett Gakiya and CJ Esparza, CJ is aligned as a heel here, though they could possibly ignore that without many people noticing. I guess the entries could be...the Geek Council, the Highwaymen – Chris Hazard & Stumpy, Wrestling Redefined – Aaron Matthews & Jason Vendetta, but beyond that, they’ll have to import a bunch.

He’s interrupted by Dave Parker & Tripp Strychnine, who say they want to be entered into the tournament. Devore says they’re not on the card tonight…well I guess he didn’t see the lineup on Chicago Pro Wrestling, cause they are. Devore says he didn’t know they were a team. Mastermind comes out and says he’s been emailing Devore repeatedly about his tag team and Devore has been avoiding him. Devore says he has been ignoring him, but if he doesn’t have a tag team he’ll kick his butt himself. So it’s a match between Mastermind’s team and the duo in the ring.

The War Pigs vs. Dave Parker & Tripp Strychnine – The Pigs are two large men in black masks, one is way overweight which I’ll call #2, the other is just big and I’ll call him #1. And who are these guys? Parker and Tripp jump the Pigs, double whip double clothesline by the Pigs. #1 beats on Parker, #2 dumps Tripp. #1 puts a nerve hold on Parker, pounds him down, tag #2, he shoves him in the corner, knocks Tripp off, splash to the back of Parker. Double team kneelift off the ropes, #1 in, double team powerbomb pickup and BOOT gets the pin. Total squash. I hope these Pigs aren’t some newbies. I THINK I know who #2 is, #1 was wearing sleeves to cover up any tattoos he may have had. I don’t see Parker & Tripp getting past round one.

WINNERS: The War Pigs pin -> 3:05 mins. ½*

Dennis Devine vs. Jason Vendetta – Devine has a duo in his corner called “The Bod Squad” consisting of JC Michaels and Kenny O’Brien. Oh no. The squirt the crowd with something. They’re having some sort of sound problem, as they keep playing one certain Linkin Park song then switching to some other music. Devine works the arm, but Vendetta with an OK roll for two. Jason with repeated headlock takedowns, baseball slide dropkick says Devine out. Devine with a messed up neckbreaker on the ropes gets two. Devine with a dropkick to the back for one. Backcracker gets two. Russian legsweep, ties him up, cover gets two. Vendetta with a clothesline in the corner, running bootwipe gets two. The Bods hop on the apron, Devine throws powder in Vendetta’s face, ugly looking facebuster follows and gets the pin. Match was butt-ugly and messed up.

WINNER: Dennis Devine pin -> 6:10 mins. ½*

Well JC Michaels has the mike, claiming they can wrestle, they’re Wrestling ReDefined, they’re Tuff-N-Stuff, they are the Weapons of Mass Destruction, they can take it to Zero Gravity, they’re cooler than the Hybrids. They ramble on being the best tag team in HPW…blah blah blah. Sure.

Fatal Four Way
Brett Gakiya vs. CJ Esparza vs. Axis vs. Woody McGuire – Another Midwest Mob battle, with an odd man in the mix. Seen so many of these faceoffs I’m starting to tire out. Brett and Woody start, they work the arms, trip covers get two. CJ and Axi in, CJ does the fingerpoke of doom but Axis isn’t playing along after taking a two count. They go outside in a dispute, Woody and Brett suicide dive them on the floor. Axis puts Brett in and hits a legdrop for two. Brett with a trip, and headlocks Axis, spinning heel kick gets two. Brett tags Woody, pounds Axis, dropkick gets two. Brett dropkick on Axis for two. Brett snap mare, punt gets two. Axis crashes into the post on a charge, CJ springboard clothesline on Brett gets two. Axis intercepts Brett on the top rope and spinebusters him for two. Brett in a slugfest with CJ, backbreaker, stomach breaker, nasty facebuster by CJ. CJ dropkick in the corner, tags Axis. Axis knocks Brett inside out, short powerbomb gets two. Axis wants to tag CJ in, slam, running whisper in the wind for two. Axis in with a headlock, Brett out and hits a running kneelift. CJ in, Brett kicks him off and tags Woody. Woody with clotheslines, flying knees, head knock, double headscissors send CJ and Axis to the floor. Woody charges but CJ and Axis trip him up, Axis puts Woody back in, Axis ties up the leg, surfboard stomp gets one. Axis pounds McGuire, tag CJ, suplex, neckbreaker gets two. CJ with a side slam, waistlock, Woody breaks free and hits an enzuigiri, Axis in, snap mare & kick, moonsault kneedrop gets two. Brett in with a dropkick, snap mare gets two. 15 minutes thus far. Brett kick, running knee strike, Woody assists with a double boot. Brett snap mares CJ over the top, Woody sets CJ on the top rope, Axis DDT’s Woody on the apron to break it up, Brett with the Dragonfly on CJ and gets the pin! Match just drug on way too long in my view and I was starting to get bored.

WINNER: Brett Gakiya pin -> 17:10 mins. **½

Hunter Matthews vs. Petey Clark – No Knight Wagner here. They trade slaps, Pete with a shoulderblock, they fight for a headlock until Hunter does a hair yank. Chops traded, snap mare, kneedrop, fistdrop by Hunter for two. Hunter puts Pete in the tree of woe and stands on the groin muscle for two. He doesn’t shout he saw this on TV once, but does two suplexes, the third is countered to a small package for two. Hunter with the rope burn, whip to the corner, Petey hops him for a two count rollup. Hunter with a spinning neckbreaker, fistdrop from the top gets two. Lawler chant erupts. Hunter goes to the sleeper, Petey eventually hits a side suplex on it, slugfest, Petey with a hip toss, DDT, moonsault gets two. Hunter with a belly to belly suplex toss gets two. Petey with a running knee strike gets two. But Hunter with a piledriver gets the pin!

WINNER: Hunter Matthews pin -> 11:55 mins. ***

Hunter, in a display of bad sportsmanship beats Clark down further than delivers a SECOND piledriver. Devore gets in Hunter’s face over that.

Twin City Wrecking Crew – Conner Riley & Chuck Ray vs. Bod Squad – JC Michaels & Kenny O’Brien – Oh boy. Conner notes the ring announcer has a birthday tonight and do some goofy ritual for him, which he has his girlfriend come into the ring to spank him. A cute girl is reffing this match, but as small as she is, hope she doesn’t get caught in between these big guys. Chuck and Kenny start with a test of strength. No good, Riley in to test strength, no good, JC in to test strength, no good so Kenny clotheslines Conner down. Tieup, surf stomp gets two. Devine with a kneeshot and chokes from the outside as JC accosts the girl. JC with a clothesline, elbow gets two. Ugly double DDT and wishbone by the Bods. Irish whip, Conner crashes into Kenny…ugly suplex by Conner gets two. I’m wondering if he was knocked loopy by cracking his head against Kenny’s or something, but find out later he wasn’t. Devine and JC go hit the bar as Kenny wants to tag out and yells at them. Riley rollup gets two. Clothesline Ken, tag JC, ugly neckbreaker by Riley, Ken and Chuck in, brawl ensues, JC smothers this poor girl in the corner as Devine throws powder in Chuck’s face, JC slams Kenny on Chuck, Conner is KO’ed, cover gets three. Barf. This match was horrible for multiple reasons. I’m guessing both will be in the tourney, but the Bod Squad is likely to stink up the joint.

WINNERS: The Bod Squad pin -> 8:35 mins. ¼*

Dewey Dawson comes out saying that his regular partner Gilbert Lewis had suffered a concussion earlier today, but doesn’t know what happened to him. He believes he was mugged and after the match he’s gonna find out who did it. He says he found a stand in partner for tonight.

Morton Von Prose & Black Dragon vs. Dewey Dawson & Bobby Dahl – MVP & Dragon have a new team name instead of New Era, but I can’t spell it so I’m not gonna try. Dewey does his usual attempt to hop the top rope but trips again. I should show him how to do it myself. He tries again and makes it, then goes acting all proud of himself. Dewey and Dragon start, Dewey rolls around, Dragon too. They jockey for position, tag MVP, tag Dahl. Shoulderblock Dahl and rides MVP, MVP bails and tags Dragon. Yokozuna stance as Dragon tries to sumo wrestle Dahl but can’t budge him, so Dragon does a drop toe hold, tag MVP and he kicks away. Double whip double backdrop and the ring bounces! Dahl gets an armbar and tags Dewey. Dewey with a bite, clothesline gets two. Super thong chant on Dragon by the BWA kids. Dewey with a splash from the second rope gets two. Ten punch in the corner, Dewey charges but hits the post. Tag MVP, the former New Era work the arm, Dragon gets an armbar DDT, but Dewey blocks another and hits a DDT. Dahl suddenly walks out of the match. Huh? Was he the one who attacked Gilbert? Dewey with a slam, he’s favoring his shoulder a lot, he goes up, moonsault MISSED! Way off. Dragon goes for a suplex, blocked, Dewey tries to suplex him but the arm hurts too much, Dragon with a clawhold legsweep, MVP with the swanton bomb and that gets the pin. Well I hope the New Era are in the tag tourney.

WINNERS: Morton Von Prose & Black Dragon pin -> 15 mins. ***

The War Pigs run out from the back, along with Mastermind and Cherry Malone, the Pigs attack Dewey Dawson, MVP and Dragon come back in with kendo sticks to run them off. Doug Devore interjects himself demanding the Pigs leave. Maybe the Mastermind is the one who did it? EMTs are called for Dewey, his shoulder may be dislocated. Call him questionable for NGW tomorrow.

Gauntlet Match
Eric Ruffington vs. Dangerous Drew Thomas – Where’s the feature presentation? Well Nikki Knight has Blake Steel and Rizz as the other two men to face Ruff. The crowd gives Nikki a lotta crap, the poor girl is just miserable after the show’s over. Ruff with an armbar, armdrags, they throw dropkicks at each other and just get air. Drew stalls, Ruff with a drop toe hold, clothesline, slam, Nikki grabs at Ruff and is caught by the ref…but doesn’t call a DQ on the spot. I would had, cause Drew gets a slam and suplex for two. Drew with a rope walk, leg clothesline gets two. Snapmare & chinlock, knee shots, choke, PUNT LOW BLOW by Drew gets two. Drew continues the beatdown, rolls through a crossbody attempt, SUPERKICK gets two. But somehow Ruff gets a piledriver outta nowhere for three.

Drew Thomas, you ARE the WEAKEST link…goodbye! 9:55 mins. ***¼

Eric Ruffington vs. Rizz – Rizz attacks, Ruff with elbows and a slam, Rizz though pulls out some brass knucks and KO’s Ruff for the deliberate DQ.

Rizz, you ARE the WEAKEST link! Goodbye! 11:10 mins. DUD

Eric Ruffington vs. Blake Steel – Ruff, knocked out allows Blake to do a flying kneedrop from the top and get the pin. Yeah, what a brilliant strategy.

WINNER: Blake Steel pin -> 11:30 mins. DUD

The heels celebrate their handiwork, Ruff grabs Nikki and threatens to give her a piledriver as Steel and company are intimidated to get in and save her. Doug Devore grabs a mike and he’s tired of the BS going on here as Nikki is screaming, Doug says if Blake and Ruff want to act like bad dogs then it’s a dog-collar match between the two next month and this BS ends! Finally.

HPW Heavyweight Championship
(c)Diego Corleone vs. Bloody Harker Dirge – The girl ref is back! Diego comes out first to what we thought was Harker’s music screaming and yelling demanding the champ be introduced before the challenger. Geez, what an egomaniac. And Diego is crawling around the seats with his hangman’s noose. And that poor girl has to keep him in line. Diego stalls like mad after Harker enters the ring drooling red goo. Finally we get a lockup, Dirge with a leg scissors rollup for two. Diego tries some rollups but gets two. Test of strength, Diego gets an armbar, Dirge bites him and chops away. Diego tries to fall outside, but Dirge slingshots him in, powerslam gets two. Diego hangs in the ropes but gets a neck snap when Dirge walks over. Diego goes up, but Dirge slams him off. Chops to the head, Dirge tries a splash but gets the knees. Diego with a belly to belly slam and chokes away. Diego with a snapmare and leg scissors, knee to the gut, and it’s the ab stretch! Dirge breaks free, locks in the ab stretch himself, then turns it into a Russian leg sweep. Splash attempt misses, Diego dumps Harker out, rake on the floor, put in, face slam gets two. Diego side suplex and gets a chinlock, but Harker bites his fingers! Diego with a high knee and head slam, forearm shots to the back lead to a one foot cover for two. Yeah like THAT’S gonna beat him. Diego with a bearhug, but Harker boxes his ears. Sideslam by Diego, goes up, kneedrop MISSED! Dirge with a kneelift, elbow, BOOT, fireman’s carry toss gets two. Dirge crotches Diego, neck snap on the ropes, and they spill to the floor slugging it out. The ref counts, Harker puts Diego in at eight…but doesn’t get in and the count hits TEN! Well that’s Harker’s own fault! Heck I was yelling the count at him, did he not hear me?

WINNER and STILL CHAMP: Diego Corleone countout -> 16:55 mins. ***½

Harker’s not done, splash in the corner, clothesline, and Diego goes spilling on the floor! Harker argues with the girl ref but to no avail. The ring announcer claimed Dirge was robbed…uh, no he was just careless.

The Verdict: Well, the show definitely was a mixed bag. What was good was pretty decent, and what was bad was REALLY bad. I haven’t gotten to the prior HPW show yet due to only getting my misplaced notebook last week, but looking at notes, without the Chicago folks there are fewer fresh matchups due to the central Illinois folks being stuck having to work each other. However, it’s now wide open to St. Louis, the Quad Cities, and non-MSPW Chicago folks who are looking for a Friday night booking who are willing to work with the central Illinois guys.

Thumbs in the middle.

The tag tourney, it looks like these are the definite entries – The Geek Council, The War Pigs, MVP & Black Dragon, The Bod Squad (ugh), Parker & Tripp, Twin City Wrecking Crew, then two wildcards. It’s looking quite weak unless two really hot teams are thrown in the mix.
