3/18/2K6 Peoria, IL
Tornados wrecked Springfield, so I headed for Peoria to get my wrestling fix and escape from the destruction!
This event took place one week after the disaster that ravaged my hometown of Springfield. At the time of this show, my neighborhood was mostly still without power, and the poles behind the house had yet to be replaced. Work crews were planting new poles from outside of town toward the inside and filling in the donutholes of outages. Since all wrestling events in Springfield were scrapped due to the damage and power loss it was a pleasant escape for me to drive up to Peoria and take in some wrestling action. Heck, a few of the Peoria guys WERE down in Springfield last weekend, and had to ride out the storm as buildings surrounding the one they were in suffered considerable damage.
I’m only now getting around to finishing this rap sheet I started a long time ago due to the lack of activity and high boredom levels in my crappy job at CMS’s debacle of IT consolidation. Back a year ago I left these gathering dust as I got so behind and busy that wrestling reviews were no longer a priority.
Live from the Peoria Riverplex. Your hosts are Scooter and Doug Devore. Attendance was counted to be about 130. They were having problems with the mikes at the time, so they resorted to shouting. Devore welcomed Dewey Dawson & Gilbert Lewis to the ring. They run through the lineup.
Triple Threat Championship
(c)Brett Gakiya vs. Scott Keyes vs. Alto the Great - I haven't seen Keyes in action in quite a long time. Not sure the reason, but he survived the Springfield tornados. Alto starts hitting people and gets cut down, but manages a double armdrag and dropkicks both out. Double sunset and Brett dropkicks Keyes. Brett gets caught, is slung to the apron, but manages a headscissors, Alto gets X-factors. Alto knees Keyes. Alto forward suplexes Brett. Snap mare, dropkick Alto, throws Brett straight up and down. Keyes attacks Alto, but Keyes gets a stomach breaker, senton by Alto. Shoulderblock on Brett, lungblower by Alto. Keyes backdrops Alto, chops Brett, Alto with another lungblower, senton on Keyes. Brett with a knee to the chin of Alto. Keyes catches Brett with a fisherman’s buster for two. Keyes whips Alto into the corner, kick to the face, tornado blocked, Alto goes up, Keyes shoves him down, Brett intercepts, tries for the dragonfly, Brett tries the hurraconranna in midair but Keyes lands on the back of his head…two count. Brett tries the area code kick on Alto and misses, Keyes has Brett, Alto twisting suicide dive on the two! Keyes with a springboard suicide dive of his own on Alto and Brett. Brett chops Keyes, does his own springboard off the second rope onto Alto and banged up his shoulder. Chopfest in front, Brett slips on the ropes but connects with the back. Gakiya gets a backbreaker from Keyes, Alto with a guillotine, Keyes gets two with a twist senton to break it up. Alto moonsaults off the top, enzuigiri on Keyes, powerslam…Keyes goes for a frogsplash…MISSED! Alto goes up, Brett gets up, goes for the dragonfly…bad bump and doesn’t get all of it…J-Mac quips that’s why they call it high risk…moonsault onto Keyes and gets the pin.
WINNER and STILL CHAMP: Brett Gikaya pin -> 9:35 mins. ***
Someone runs out and hits a Canadian Destroyer on Brett…it’s CJ Esparza! Geez, what’s that about? Scott Keyes leaves in disgust.
Another man who survived the Springfield tornados, Catalyst Cory Carter comes out to rant, calling himself the true main event. He says his tag team will win the gauntlet and the titles, those being the New Era. The crowd gets more and more agitated and vocal at him. He says he’ll beat Big Pappa for the title tonight too. Geez, lotta heel heat here. Big Pappa comes out to stare down TripC.
First Blood Match
Deacon Hobbs vs. "FGP" Raul Montenegro - Deacon's still sporting that scar on his neck. Winner is to get a future title shot. And Sinnister has a chair. Here comes Hobbs and nails him! Toss into the post! Sinnister gets a clothesline, stomps away. Chair is put in the corner, Sinnister with a rake, ten punch in the corner, clothesline and fetches a can. LOW BLOW Hobbs, canshot, then goes after a chair and fetches a chain. Sinnister slugs back, but Hobbs trips him down, goes to the second rope but meets a chainshot from Sinnister. They spill outside, Hobbs is tossed to the post. Hobbs whips Sinnister, who runs into the ref and knocks him out! Sinnister throws a trashcan at Hobbs, they slug it out, Hobbs KOs him and throws a chair at his head. Hobbs goes up, Sinnister chairs and lidshots him, goes up and hits the superplex. Someone in a yellow mask comes out and BLASTS Sinnister! Hobbs blocks a chairshot, Sinnister is definitely bleeding…Hobbs gets the mask off and it’s CHRIS HAZARD!!! Robbie the ref makes it back in the ring to see the cut and calls it. Raul can’t believe it.
WINNER: Deacon Hobbs KO -> 9:50 mins. **
NGW Tag Team Championship - Gauntlet Match
Petey & Jesse Clark vs. Egos Inc. - Dennis Devine & Axis w/ pNut - This is a four team elimination match, but only two teams are out and the losing team is replaced by the next in line and the last team left leaves with the tag titles. And we start with two former champs here, but the Clarks are GAW tag title holders and hoping to repeat their feat of being dual champs. They’re wearing cow shorts, and people go MOO! Axis & Jessie start. They do basic stuff to start, tag Petey, legdrop on the arm. Axis clothesline, chops, boot choke, and BOOT WIPE! Tag Devine, who's head looks a lot better than it did a few weeks ago after that mishap. Backcracker, choke, rear choke on the roeps, bulldog Devine gets two. Tag Axis, slam, top rope legdrop MISSED. Tag Dennis, he kicks away but Petey knocks him, goes up, gets tripped, Dennis gets shoved off, flying senton Petey misses! Double tags, Jesse with clotheslines, pNut jumps on the apron, Devine with a LOW BLOW, Axis with a dropkick…Russian legsweep combo and there’s a pin.
WINNERS: Ego’s Inc. pin -> 9 mins. **½
NGW Tag Champs Kandi Deluxe & Stumpy vs. Ego’s Inc. – Dennis Devine & Axis – And the Egos attack right away, Kandi pounds on Axis, Dennis gets powerbombed on the floor by Stumpy! Axis BOOTS Deluxe. Axis clotheslines Kandi, Stumpy clotheslines Devine off the apron. Axis slams Kandi, sets him up, WIPES HIS BOOT! Devine in, dropkick, choke, screams at the crowd like a sissy prompting laughter. Devine headbutts Kandi LOW, tie up, knee to the head. Kandi with a reverse DDT on Axis. Tag Stumpy, he beats him down, headbutts, tag Kandi. Hip toss and elbow, armbar…rope walk shot gets two. Axis with a small package, suplex, nails Kandi on the rear for two. Dennis in, whip into Stumpy, chops, kneedrop, splash gets two. Pendulum swing by Stump, then SITS on Devine! Kandi shoulderblocks, ten punch, shoulderblock gets two. Axis in to slug it out, double BOOT! Tags, Stumpy hits clotheslines, slams, Axis is sent out, Stumpy powerslams Devine, legdrop off the second rope gets the pin.
WINNERS and STILL CHAMPS: Stumpy & Kandi Deluxe pin -> 10:45 mins. **
NGW Tag Champs Kandi Deluxe & Stumpy vs. The New Era – Morton Von Prose & Black Dragon – Melee after the match, Devine throws Axis into the post and gets in pNut’s face! New Era…dropkick on Stumpy by MVP, Dragon hangs Kandi out to dry in the corner, Stumpy comes back with a double clothesline, dumps Dragon. MVP feigns injury, Kandi puts Dragon back in the ring, BOOT gets two. Dropkick on Dragon gets two. Deluxe gets caught, Dragon suplexes him for two. Deluxe gets a clothesline, tags Stumpy, snap mare, Dewey Dawson comes by to give me a hug. If he’s not wearing deodorant, I can’t smell body odor due to losing my sense of smell. He stopped doing the hugging once I did it back to him unexpectedly to freak him out. *smirk* Stumpy tries to do a side suplex but can’t lift him up, so he just drops him. MVP is still feigning injury. The ref is helping pull MVP’s boot off, it was a trick, BOOTSHOT, Dragon with a clip and gets the pin. LAME! New Era tries to pick a fight with a fan on their way out.
WINNERS and NEW CHAMPS: New Era pin -> 7:35 mins. **¼
NGW Heavyweight Championship
(c)Big Pappa vs. Catalyst Cory Carter – Ryan Phoenix comes out with TripC. Pappa uses his size to dominate, TripC stalls, then rakes, but gets nothing with a shoulderblock. Ryan Phoenix grabs a foot then gets EJECTED by the ref. Good. TripC splashes in the corner, clothesline Pappa gets two. Slam Pappa, elbow two. Pappa misses a charge, TripC with an uppercut, chops, but Pappa chops him ten. TripC with a LOW BLOW, kicks away at the arms, but Pappa catches him in a tombstone for two. Slugfest and TripC hits the floor. Truk Thompson runs out and attacks Pappa…WTF? Full nelson by Truk, and the ref is nowhere to be found! Truk did his damage and leaves. TripC tries to do a rock bottom on Pappa, but runs into a BLACK HOLE SLAM and gets pinned. Pappa just dominated most of this.
WINNER and STILL CHAMP: Big Pappa pin -> 10:25 mins. **¾
25-Man Royal Rumble
Phoenix with German suplexes, Brett elbows him, German suplex off the top! J-Mac says he liked that a lot. Brett sunset flip, headscissor to the mat. Brett goes up, Phoenix suplexes him off. MVP #3, the timekeeper is not on the ball it seems, double backbreaker, double facebreaker, double SPEAR by Ryan & MVP! MVP with chops on Brett! Brett splashes Phoenix, MVP with a DDT! Goes after the leg, Phoenix headscissor dribble on Brett. MVP with a legdrop. Kyle Rich is #4, goes after TripC’s troops…thinks about going after Brett. Ryan SPEARS Kyle! MVP hits a dropkick on a double whip, Kyle goes after Brett and #5 comes in. Justice takes his time, MVP takes him down with a dropkick to the chin. MVP dropkicks Brett. Ryan tries to dump Kyle but gets raked. Justice elbows MVP ten in a row, then Kyle and Brett drop theirs. Brett & Justice try to dump MVP, but he rakes them. Ryan with a running torture rack drop! #6 is Dragon, Brett hits a springboard dropkick. Justice tries to scissor MVP out. Brett snap mare, knee on Dragon. Action is hard to follow now. #7 is Devore! Justice is in trouble…Ryan and Kyle go after Devore. Ryan with a backbreaker on Brett! MVP chops Devore! Ryan with a hangman’s neckbreaker! Justice with the RKO on MVP! Devore takes Phoenix down! Brett with a slingshot double stomp! #8 is Jesse Clark but gets nailed. MVP goes out to camp, Ryan with a piledriver on Brett! Dragon has a clawhold on Devore! Justice with a snap sunset flip. #9 is Gilbert Lewis, Brett double stomp on Kyle, dropkicks Phoenix. Phoenix neckbreakers Justice. Lewis pounds on Jesse. MVP with a ribbreaker! Rich uppercuts Brett. Lewis laughs it up. Rich double stomps Brett’s chest! Devore backdrops Ryan. Rich dumps Jesse out! First elimination! Pride is #10. Ryan tries to dump Gilbert! Big blur the match is now. Dragon is being hung. Phoenix clotheslines someone. #11 is Andy Roberts, newcomer to the ringwars. Devore almost gets rid of Phoenix. Pride chops Andy. Lewis brawls with Dragon. Justice goes after Dragon…and flies over the top! Devore gets rid of Dragon! Two eliminations. #12 is Kandi, Ryan chokes Brett. Brett tries to take down Ryan…reverse DDT by Ryan. Deluxe goes after MVP, Lewis after Pride, Devore and Roberts fight, Kyle fights Gakiya! Andy rakes Devore! Lewis tries to dump Phoenix. #13 is Buzz Rogers! Pride chops MVP! Kandi tries to ditch Pride. MVP dropkicks someone in the tree of woe! Pride slams MVP. Brett is on the apron, Rich with a dropkick on him but hangs on. MVP chokes Pride. Buzz tries to ditch Lewis. #14 is Stumpy, goes after MVP! Lewis almost dumped by Andy! Buzz splashes Stumpy! #15 is Dennis Devine. Ryan snake eyes on Brett! Devore after Kyle. Stumpy splashes MVP in the corner. Devine headscissors Deluxe out! Ryan with a full nelson on Roberts! MVP tries to ditch Brett! Brett with a necksnap, Roberts baseball slide dropkick into Phoenix! Buzz chokes Devore. #16 is Jester…he’s after Phoenix! They fight on the floor! Devine rock bottom on Roberts! Jester is tossed into the post! Pride almost ditches Andy! Devine with a knee to the groin of Devore! Phoenix neck snaps Jester. #17 is Dewey. Roberts goes out to camp as Dewey takes the long way around the ring. Devine also goes out to camp. Jester gets stomped by three guys. Devine gets kicked in the groin by Phoenix. Nerds pound on Stumpy. MVP clotheslines Pride. Phoenix backbreaker on Brett! Ryan low blow on Dewey! #18 is Keyes, pounds on Phoenix but gets dropped on the top rope. Headbutt low blow on Jester! Ryan chokes Buzz. #19 is Axis. So many bodies in the ring. Jester chokes Phoenix. Axis chokes Brett. Dawson tries to dump Kyle. Stumpy tries to dump Gilbert. #20 is Alto, shoulderblocks Keyes. Roberts low blows Axis. Stumpy eliminates MVP! #21 is Kody Kash. Keyes tries to dump Rich. Hard to see anything. #22 is TripC. Devine & Phoenix try to dump Jester! Alto tries to get rid of Buzz! TripC is stalling. Lewis splashes Stumpy. Kids keep asking why I’m taking notes. #23 is Petey Clark. Jester tries to dump Phoenix. Alto drops Keyes on the top rope. Axis puts Brett Gakiya in the tree of woe. TripC chops Petey. Devine pulls Gilbert out to brawl on the floor! #24 is Sinnister. Lewis throws Devine into the rail. TripC chops Axis. Stumpy and Kash try to dump Dawson. Only six eliminations thus far, and here comes the last one, #25 Apocolypse! Everyone suddenly stops fighting to look at him. The fight resumes as Apoc removes his toys and gets in. Apoc fires shattershot, chokeslams Buzz! Apoc dumps Andy Roberts! Apoc clotheslines Buzz out! He throws Kash out! Brett hops on Apoc, but gets yanked down. Apoc dumps Lewis out! He throws Petey out! Geez, just pile onto him already! Alto attacks Apoc, Alto gets thrown out into the pile of bodies! Sinnister goes after Apoc, Apoc spinebusters him! Jester throws Apoc out at 48:30! Phoenix and Jester eliminate each other! Gakiya clotheslines Keyes over, but he hangs on. Apoc and Jester chase Phoenix to the back. Brett dropkicks Keyes out! TripC running forearm smash into Stumpy! Kyle Rich dumps Dawson out! Devine & Axis dump Stumpy out! Sinnister throws Devine between the ropes. Axis powerslams Brett! TripC chops Devore! Axis has Brett, Sinnister throws Devine out, then Axis! Five left. Gakiya, TripC, Kyle Rich, Devore, Sinnister. Sinnister and Axis go at it. Rich dropkicks Sinnister out! Brett slams Rich, flying headbutt off the top! Devore tries to dump TripC. Rich clotheslines Brett out! Crowd’s not happy. Trading of chops, TripC and Rich slug it out. Devore bashes their heads together! Devore dumps TripC out! Rich vs. Devore. Crowd chants TripC sucks. Rich tries to nail Devore, Devore charges and clotheslines Rich over, but he doesn’t hit the floor and Devore starts celebrating early. Rich back in and dumps Devore out!
WINNER: Kyle Rich -> 55 mins. N/A
Statistics of this rumble…Apoc scored the most eliminations with six, but oddly enough he also spent the least amount of time in the ring at 1:55. Kyle Rich had five, Devore, Jester, & Sinnister had two each, six others got one. Brett Gakiya stayed in there the longest at 53:40, Kyle the second longest at 51:20. Phoenix, Devore and Lewis were in over 40 minutes. Jester got the bookends taking out the first and last entries. Rating rumbles/battle royals is tricky so I’ll pass.
The Verdict: Aside from the rumble there wasn’t anything that stood out as there were average matches throughout, nothing stunk either. I was happy to come watch wrestling tonight and escape the mess that tornados left just for an evening. So, I’ll just give it a…

Ryan Phoenix grabs a foot then gets EJECTED by the ref. Good. TripC splashes in the corner, clothesline Pappa gets two. Slam Pappa, elbow two. Pappa misses a charge, TripC with an uppercut, chops, but Pappa chops him ten. TripC with a LOW BLOW, kicks away at the arms, but Pappa catches him in a tombstone for two. Slugfest and TripC hits the floor. Truk Thompson runs out and attacks Pappa…WTF? Full nelson by Truk, and the ref is nowhere to be found! Truk did his damage and leaves. TripC tries to do a rock bottom on Pappa, but runs into a BLACK HOLE SLAM and gets pinned. Pappa just dominated most of this.

Goes after the leg, Phoenix headscissor dribble on Brett. MVP with a legdrop. Kyle Rich is #4, goes after TripC’s troops…thinks about going after Brett. Ryan SPEARS Kyle! MVP hits a dropkick on a double whip, Kyle goes after Brett and #5 comes in. Justice takes his time, MVP takes him down with a dropkick to the chin. MVP dropkicks Brett. Apoc fires shattershot, chokeslams Buzz! Apoc dumps Andy Roberts! Apoc clotheslines Buzz out! He throws Kash out! Brett hops on Apoc, but gets yanked down. Apoc dumps Lewis out! He throws Petey out! Geez, just pile onto him already! Alto attacks Apoc, Alto gets thrown out into the pile of bodies! Sinnister goes after Apoc, Apoc spinebusters him! Jester throws Apoc out at 48:30! Phoenix and Jester eliminate each other! Gakiya clotheslines Keyes over, but he hangs on. Apoc and Jester chase Phoenix to the back. Brett dropkicks Keyes out! TripC running forearm smash into Stumpy! Kyle Rich dumps Dawson out! Devine & Axis dump Stumpy out! Sinnister throws Devine between the ropes. Axis powerslams Brett! TripC chops Devore! Axis has Brett, Sinnister throws Devine out, then Axis! Five left. Gakiya, TripC, Kyle Rich, Devore, Sinnister. Sinnister and Axis go at it. Rich dropkicks Sinnister out! Brett slams Rich, flying headbutt off the top! Devore tries to dump TripC. Rich clotheslines Brett out! Crowd’s not happy. Trading of chops, TripC and Rich slug it out. Devore bashes their heads together! Devore dumps TripC out! Rich vs. Devore. Crowd chants TripC sucks. Rich tries to nail Devore, Devore charges and clotheslines Rich over, but he doesn’t hit the floor and Devore starts celebrating early. Rich back in and dumps Devore out!

Statistics of this rumble…Apoc scored the most eliminations with six, but oddly enough he also spent the least amount of time in the ring at 1:55. Kyle Rich had five, Devore, Jester, & Sinnister had two each, six others got one. Brett Gakiya stayed in there the longest at 53:40, Kyle the second longest at 51:20. Phoenix, Devore and Lewis were in over 40 minutes. Jester got the bookends taking out the first and last entries. Rating rumbles/battle royals is tricky so I’ll pass.
