Today was one of those days for an early morning road
trip. Last year I had went to the
Midwest Gaming Classic, a convention where there were numerous arcade machines,
pinball tables, and a bunch of stuff for sale.
There were some competitions to participate in and of course I tried
entering as many of those as possible in attempts to win stuff. And win stuff I did, a few games for a few
different systems I didn't have--various Atari consoles. It was a great time and I was hoping for
another one this year. Well as time
went on the chances of another one happening in 2005 were dimming considerably
until it was decided to wait until 2006.
I had a similar deal in 2003 where I went to Mall of America wanting to
take part in the Video Game World Championships which was ultimately
cancelled. I did notice there was ONE
upcoming event in Illinois, and that was the Video Game Summit. I didn't know what to expect so I decided to
make the trek up there and take part in the contests up there and try to win as
many of them as possible. Got up at
5:30am, rode up I-55 and made it to the location at 9am. The whole event took up one conference room
of a Fairfield Inns and Suites plus a hallway.
Not anywhere close to the size of the Midwest Gaming Classic but there
was enough stuff there to look through.
What I found to be lacking was the Gamecube stuff. The competition was very light, until I went
up against other players in the old Atari game Warlords and got
demolished. Didn't matter though cause
I won a lot of various items in other games.
I had won so much stuff that I left during the last competition so
someone else would take home the prize.
Going home after the event, I had to decide if I wanted to
stop anywhere. Since I knew there was a
"major show" in Peoria put on by NGW I decided to hit it on the way
back. Knowing the I-74 bridge is out I
had to drive around with enough lead time to find my way to the place cause of
all the roads that are closed around the area.
Live from the Peoria Riverplex. Your ring announcer is Doug Devore. His partner on commentary is Scooter. A kid in front of me really does not like Scooter. Attendance was somewhere between 80-100.
All the matches this evening have stips.
The Rules: Four sealed tubes are hung on poles. Quadruple threat with all four brawling at once. Anyone who gets a winning fall can take down ONE of the tubes, but they cannot open it. DQ's are given out for opening a tube or getting a tube without earning it, eliminating you from the match. In one of the tubes is a contract for a future title shot. Match is over when all four tubes are taken down.
"Soon To Be" Justin MacIntyre vs. Brett Gikaya vs.
"Party Boy" Ray Hez vs. Michael Fine - I tease Ray with "No
Light Tubes" for the last time I took in an NGW show. J-Mac is wearing really freaky tights. Brett & Ray pair off, J-Mac & Fine
pair off and they fight on the floor.
J-Mac posts Fine, Brett armbars Ray.
Fine arms J-Mac into the apron, Brett runs Ray to the floor. All four on the floor, Brett with a suicide somersault
on all three men! J-Mac back in first
as a kid mocks his pants. Brett rams
Ray into the side of the ring, Fine takes a drink and spews water in J-Mac's
face! Brett with a DDT on Ray on the
apron! J-Mac uppercuts Fine, Brett goes
after JMac, side elbow JMac. Ray yanks
Brett out, JMac suplex on Fine. Ray slams
Brett on the floor. JMac chops, Fine
trips JMac into the ropes, Ray chokes Brett on the rail. Fine running kick to the JAW, hey that jaw's
still broke you know. Fine pushes that
foot into that bad jaw, Brett & Ray back in, spinning heel kick Brett on
Ray for two. JMac whips Fine, dropkick
for two. Fine small package on JMac and
gets a pinfall!
WINNER: Michael Fine
pin -> 4:35 mins.
Fine takes a tube and leaves. Brett dodges a clothesline, JMac snapmares Brett like crazy with
five, six, seven in a row. Ray suplexes
someone. Michael Fine runs back out
complaining about something, apparently having opened his tube and discovering
it empty. Sheesh, he thought he wasn't
gonna get caught? Moron.
LOSER: Michael Fine
DQ -> 6:35 mins.
JMac pokes Ray, clothesline on Brett. JMac tries a piledriver Brett but he jumps
out of the hold and dropkicks JMac for two.
Dragonfly is desired by many, Brett side elbow on Ray who bails. LOW BLOW by JMac on Brett! Suplex JMac, RUDE AWAKENING gets two as Ray
tries to take the fall himself. JMac
goes for a figure four on Ray, Brett hits a springboard splash off the
top! JMac protests but gets kicked in
the chest, second rope elbow. JMac
drops Brett on the top rope. Ray hits a
springboard moonsault on Brett and gets the pin.
WINNER: "Party
Boy" Ray Hez pin -> 9:45 mins.
JMac powerbombs Ray off as he was going for a tube. JMac whips Brett in the corner, Ray with a
weak shoulderblock, Ray throws JMac into Brett, Ray hits a spinning piledriver
on Brett for ANOTHER pinfall!
WINNER: "Party
Boy" Ray Hez pin -> 11:00 mins.
JMac hits a Roofies Bomb on Ray, Brett dropkicks JMac on the
side. Ray kick DDT on JMac. Brett hits a moonsault on JMac. Ray goes for a tube, Brett goes after him,
Ray hits a sunset powerbomb on Brett!
Ray gets a tube, Brett gets folded up off a side suplex, dangerous. Brett hits a springboard dropkick on Ray
after Ray tries to dump him out. Brett
backdrops Ray into JMac, Brett hits a springboard inverted DDT on Ray and scores
the pinfall.
WINNER: Brett Gikaya
pin -> 13:40 mins.
Two tubes left, Brett gets a tube, Ray goes for the other
tube. Brett hurraconrannas JMac out of
the ring. Brett goes after Ray,
DRAGONFLY!!! Brett has a tube, Ray has
a tube, Ray has to get that last one.
Ref is calling for the bell.
Brett has two tubes in his hand, Ray gets a parting shot to get one of
the tubes he rightfully won earlier.
FINAL: Ray Hez 2,
Brett Gikaya 1 -> 15 mins. ***¼
Interesting concept for a match. Haven't seen a match under these rules before but it seems one or
two of the wrestlers had trouble understanding how to win. About a week later the tubes were
opened. Dunno if the tube they took
down was the one they had in hand cause they weren't marked, and it seemed there
was some switching around at the end.
Brett Gikaya ended up being the actual winner of the title shot.
The Rules: pNut and Dennis Devine are locked in small cages. Whoever fetches a key and opens a cage first wins the match.
Kody Kash w/ pNut vs. Stumpy w/ Dennis Devine - You know I'm
probably lucky I'm not that well known a figure among NGW fans otherwise some
retarded person will make the same ancient idiotic jokes fans from other feds
make--which probably would be the best lure for me to go back more often. Someone has the gall to say pNut in a cage
is [feline] control. They lockup, but
Kash decides to bail and the fight starts outside! Stump has fans HOLD Kash up to be chopped! pNut has a water gun and is squirting at
Devine! Stump with a slam on the floor
but Kash with a LOW BLOW! Devine is called
a gimp. Back in, Kash pounds away, whip
reverse Stump hits a hip toss and a Juvy Driver. Splash in the corner by Stumpy but Kash hits a jawbreaker. A casual armbar by Kash who kicks him in the
face. An attempt to free a prisoner is
thrawted as Kash throws Stumpy into the post!
Back in, bulldog attempt is shoved off, spinkick to the head by Kash,
second rope legdrop misses! Atomic drop
and sitdown by Stumpy. Whip to the
corner, Kash easily dodges a SLOW charge, clothesline in the corner by Kash. Kash whip to the corner, but Stumpy hits the
CLOTHESLINE FROM HECK. He goes to free
a prisoner, but instead of his manager he rightfully frees pNut.
WINNER: Stumpy escape -> 7:35 mins. *
But, pNut LOW BLOWS Stumpy to show her total of lack of gratitude. They soak Devine with water on their way
out. Wonder what the setup was for a
match of this kind? Sloppy match, and
the fans behind me were vocal about it boring them.
The Rules: One fall three way action but only submissions will count to win.
(c)Kyle Rich vs. Johnny "Walker" Justice vs. Russ
"RC" Stevens - Okay we're in Peoria so it's Russ Stevens today. I'm getting my first questions by fans as to
why I'm taking notes. I need to come up
with some BS story about me being a reporter for a major wrestling magazine
where I've been assigned the midwest region. Justice with a stunner on Russ right off the bat! The brawl begins, Justice with a headlock on
Rich, shoveoff, dropkick grazes Justice.
Uppercut by Kyle, whip a botched move into a fireman's carry slam into a
sharpshooter by Russ. Wheelbarrow
attempt by Stevens goes horribly wrong, and goes to a sharpshooter that's
broken up by a jumping clothesline to the face by Justice. LOW BLOW by Justice on someone, liontamer is
slapped on Kyle, Stevens tries for a reverse Boston crab but can't turn him
over and people are shouting "QUIT MESSING UP!" Okay, I just KNOW I'm gonna be blamed for
the back row by JMac! Stevens with a
crappy atomic drop on Justice, Kyle clothesline, repeated chops. Kyle hip toss into a neckbreaker, goes to a
headlock. Stevens has a hammerlock,
Kyle with a trip, leg jam, inverted figure four into a stretch. Stevens kicks Rich in the corner, double
whip to the corner that looked messed up.
Justice & Stevens leave the ring, Rich does a dive from the top onto
both men. Not wise with an injured
shoulder. Kyle chops away, Stevens with
a trip and elbow on Rich, camel clutch drop kick double team. Double rear chinlock by someone. Steven hits a clothesline on someone,
reverse headlock that gets some cat calls from the back row by Stevens. Rich fights off both men, goes up but gets
crotched, Justice hits a missile dropkick from Stevens' shoulders on Rich, goes
for a code red like maneuver. Rich
picks him up and drops him to break the hold, sharpshooter attempt is broken
up. Rich gets pitched to the floor,
dive attempt by Steven is sidestepped.
Justice dives at them but hits Stevens with a elbow to the
forehead. Rich with a spinning
hangmen's neckbreaker. Stevens dumps
Justice out, kicks away on Rich, Stevens tries to pull Rich off the ropes and
looks bad doing it, hits a German. Fans
with funny jeers saying he don't want to go no means no, butterfly armbar with
a bridge by Rich on Stevens and he thankfully gives it up. Rich dumps Justice out after he tries to get
a few licks in.
WINNER: Kyle Rich
submission -> 11:35 mins. -*½
Good lord, what the heck happened to Russ Stevens? The guy couldn't hit any of his spots and
just looked like someone in the early stages of training. His performance was a complete and total
embarassment. Rich and Justice tried to
save the match doing stuff to outweigh the bad, but the whole thing was beyond
saving. I really feel guilty handing
out this negative star rating.
The Rules: Hardcore rules are in effect, winner is determined when a wrestler's designated terminator decides they cannot continue the match and throws in the towel. Johnny Justice is Sinnister's designated terminator. A raffle was held to select Axis's designated terminator from the audience. The designated terminators are handcuffed together, for whatever reason.
(c)Sinnister vs. Axis - Axis attacks, slugfest ensues until
he gets dumped out, Sinnister sets up a chair and uses it to take a leap but
gets necksnapped on the top rope. Axis
fetches a weapon and hits with a panshot!
With the apron exposed, we see the other weapons under there, including
a barbed wire board, which the back row clamors for big time. Double knee to the chest by Axis, whip
reverse Sinnister SPLASH. Sinnister
chokes before fetching the pans, RAPID FIRE PANSHOTS! Knee lift Sinnister, he goes after the dreaded staple gun and
someone in the back row give him a buck, oh I really don't wanna see that. Axis with a desperate panshot of his own to
keep him from doing the deed, but then he tries to get a buck from the crowd
and has to settle for a flyer to the next major show to staple it on
Sinnister's head! I really hate staple
guns, just does nothing for me. Axis
with a BOOT, puts the pan on Sinnister's face and hits a second rope
legdrop. And the back row gets it's
wish, as Axis has the spiked board!
Setup in the corner, Sinnister kicks him, but gets thrown into the board
and raked. Axis fetches the kendo
stick, but gets neck snapped down.
Sinnister shoves Axis off the apron and hits him with the spiked club
and pounds on the floor. KENDO SHOT
Sinnister! And the two fighters are
headed into the audience! Sinnister
throws Axis into the wall, Sinnister goes up the crossbeams but gets knocked
off, Axis goes up himself! I don't
think the Riverplex management is gonna approve of that. Axis dives but gets nailed in the head with
the kendo on the way down. Sinnister
makes fans move and Axis is thrown into the seats! Trashcan shot by Sinnister!
Sinnister fetches a fork from under the ring and STABS him in the head
with it! Who does he think he is, New
Jack? SICK! Knee to the face, whip spinebuster Sinnister! Sinnister with another panshot, puts the pan
on the chest and hits a splash from the second rope. Sinnister retrieves that dollar from earlier and staples it on
Axis. YUCK! Axis somehow comes to life by hitting a clothesline, goes up but
misses the moonsault. Sinnister dumps
Axis out, clothesline on the floor.
Sinnister tries for another clothesline on the apron but misses, Axis
hits an elbow on the floor. Panshot,
Axis goes to the top but Sinnister trips him up, then prepares to slam Axis off
the top all the way down to the floor...or throw him somewhere. The fan decides he's seen enough and throws
the towel in. Sick brawl, not my cup of
tea.
WINNER and STILL CHAMP:
Sinnister TKO -> 17:35 mins. ***¼
(c)The Forsaken - Ryan Phoenix & CJ Esparrez vs. Apocalypse & Deacon Hobbs - Straight up two outta three falls. First Fall: Deacon & Pheonix start. Ryan gets an armbar, several reversals, side suplex Ryan but Hobbs holds onto a headlock. Ryan with a takedown, tag Apoc. He shoves Ryan down, clothesline, BOOT, back breaker reverse DDT for two. Gorilla press Apoc, CJ in and gets clotheslined. CJ gets backdropped over the top rope and he hits the back of his head against the apron the way down...oh boy, I hope he's not injured. Ryan is put in the ring and gets two. CJ comes back in quite quickly after Ryan hits a clothesline and tags. Shoulderblock, double team senton gets two. Crossarm neckbreaker, strangehold by CJ that's broken up. CJ latches on an octopus, Hobbs breaks it up. Tag Ryan, double dropkicks to each side of the head gets two. Knee jam, clothesline Ryan gets two. Tag CJ, axe on Apoc, whip to the corner, dropkick, tag Ryan, he goes up and attempts a double stomp on his head but misses his target. Ryan just scoops him up and hits a DVD across the knee for two. Tag CJ, Hobbs decides to jump in and throw Ryan to the post, Apoc gets a chokeslam outta nowhere for three at 9 minutes. Apoc & Hobbs 1-0. Second fall: CJ hits a dropkick to break up an anklelock Apoc has on Ryan. Hobbs is in. Ryan brainbuster gets two! Knee jam Ryan, makes a wish and hits a double legdrop. Tag CJ, he works the leg, goes for a sideways figure four but can't lock it in, so he tags Ryan who drops a knee to the leg and puts on the Texas cloverleaf! Apoc breaks it up, so CJ is tagged. Dropkick to the knee by CJ, who puts on a reverse Indian deathlock that's broken up. CJ yanks the leg on the apron before tagging Phoenix. Ryan with the shining wizard! Ryan starts celebrating early before covering for two. Hobbs up, and hits six straight German suplexes! Hobbs Germans CJ into the ROPE! Well there's more damage to the back of the head. Tag Apoc, drop toe hold legdrop combo gets two. CJ tries a springboard but gets caught in a spinebuster. Apoc powerslams Ryan, Apoc goes up, Ryan intercepts. Hobbs powerbombs Ryan Phoenix while he gives Apoc a superplex. Ryan tags out however, Hobbs hits the clotheslines, back body drops, splash legdrop combo gets two. Hobbs clotheslines CJ, ROCK BOTTOM on Phoenix gets two. Ryan grabs an ankle lock, Apoc gorilla presses CJ to the floor! Apoc with a chokeslam on Ryan, Hobbs grabs his own ankle lock and he taps!
WINNERS and NEW CHAMPS:
Apocalypse & Deacon Hobbs 2-0 (pin, submission) -> 20:35 mins.

Excellent match, just don't be doing the double stomps off
the top. I'm amazed CJ Esperrza didn't
get injured during this contest with the multiple sick bumps against the back
of his head.
The Rules: To win this match you must successfully execute your chosen finisher. TripC must land a pedigree to win. Jester must land a superkick to win. No pinfalls, but you can conceivably be counted out, DQ'ed or tap out to lose.
TripC vs. Jester - Lockups come up to a stalemate. TripC bails, Jester for some reason doesn't
pay attention jabbering with someone and gets clotheslined from behind and
dumped out. TripC with a Russian leg
sweep on the floor! Jester tosses TripC
into the post! TripC throws him in and
works the knee, throws an uppercut.
TripC with an armbar against the neck, then hits a reverse DDT into a
backbreaker. Splash in the corner by
TripC, elbow and tries for a pedigree...blocked! Back body drop by Jester!
Jester hits clotheslines in each corner of the ring, and goes for a
superkick...but it's dodged. Jester
with another clothesline, suplex. TripC
attacks the leg though, tries to splash him in the corner but misses. Jester 10-punches him in the corner, puts
TripC on the top rope, tries for a superplex but gets shoved off. Jester superkick attempt is caught, TripC
with a northern lights suplex! Chops in
the corner, another TripC splash attempt misses. Jester with a full-nelson slam, springboard moonsault, and hits
him with the Unprettier! He thinks he's
won, but appears to have forgotten about the superkick. LOW BLOW TripC, goes for the pedigree but
they reverse like mad trying for unpritters or pedigrees until TripC rams him
in the corner. TripC with a Samoan
drop. Jester KICK WHAM DDT, Unprittier
attempt blocked. HEY TUNE UP THE BAND
JESTER!!! Superkick is dodged and the
referee EATS IT! Oops. Michael Fine runs in from the back, Jester
superkicks HIM to do away with the goof.
Jester with a backbreaker into a facebuster on TripC. They slowly get up, TripC kick to the face
and they're both down again. Ref is up
and counting, they both get up and slugaway at each other. Jester tries the unprettier, TripC tries the
pedigree, they reverse like mad again until TripC DOES hit the pedigree and
it's over! Why did Jester keep going
for the Unprettier when the superkick was the move he chose to win with? Crowd acted real bored with the match, but
it was better than they were willing to give them credit for. Unfortunately, the desire for sleep was
weighing on me heavily cause of getting up at 5:30am.
WINNER: TripC KO
-> 14:50 mins. **
The Rules: Hardcore rules are in effect. Only way to win is to knock the other guy out so they can't stand up before a ten count.
(c)Chris Hazard vs. Big Pappa - Chris Hazard one week ago
was busted in the head bad enough that it required stitches to close the wound
and it's hardly healed up now. Hazard
jumps him outside the ring, and rams him in the post. Hazard with a rake and they're going into the bleachers! They end up going where all the other
wrestlers are watching, and its a bit close to where a mom has a kid. After brawling there a while, they go back
toward the ring and Pappa gets posted!
Clothesline Pappa, elbow, but gets SPEARED! Hazard fetches a chair and jams it in the gut, puts it in the
corner, but Pappa drops him on it. And
Hazard is bleeding already. Pappa with
a face buster, he pounds away in the corner and hits a splash. Hazard hits a flying clothesline, elbows, he
goes up and drops an elbow to the back!
Hazard gets the belt, Pappa grabs Hazard and tries to beltshot him on a
powerbomb attempt but doesn't get much of it, looked sloppy. Hazard argues with the ref and tries to
clothesline him, but the ref ducks and punches him in the face! Ain't that interesting! Hazard grins and pats him on the back before
turning back to Pappa. And Pappa is
bleeding from something, Hazard chokes away with the boot and fetches a chair
to choke him some more. That blood is
running down his face. SICK. Hazard with a chop as a girl is mesmerized
by the chops. Whip reverse SPLASH
Pappa...four times in a row!
Pappa...bonzai drop powerbomb!
Hazard up at eight, whip Pappa...SPEAR Hazard! Hazard hits another one and fetches a sledgehammer...and a
bag....of THUMBTACKS! Oh no...he dumps
them all on one side of the ring, tries to slam Pappa but gets POWERBOMBED into
the tacks! Oh sick. The tacks are stuck all over his body. Hazard is slammed a second time into them,
clothesline into the tacks. Hazard LOW
BLOW desperation move, CHAIRSHOT!
Hazard fetches handcuffs, ummm, wouldn't the handcuffs make it easier to
stay upright? Hazard chairshots him and
screams you are done! Hazard chairshots
him a few more times, and the handcuffs BREAK as Pappa hits the mat! He gets up at nine, Hazard gets the
sledgehammer...and nails him with it!
For some reason he picks him up and drills him in the back of the
head! The referee counts to ten and
it's over. Another sick brawl.
WINNER and STILL CHAMP:
Chris Hazard KO -> 18:25 mins. ***
In a strange visual he dons the sunglasses and hits him
AGAIN in the back of the head. Call the
medics, Big Pappa is finished! They
better have a stretcher cause they aren't gonna carry that man.
After the show, TripC was putting on some wild rant on me
about who I should or should not had been interviewing, but turned down an
interview offer like a couple days later.
HUH?
The Verdict: It was
a real mixed bag here. There was good,
and some that really wasn't good, not so much in the middle. The variety of stips in play can make it
worth a look if and when it comes out on video though so I'll grant it...
Thumbs leaning up.
