My first GCW show...
For those in GCW reading one of these for the first time, my views are solely my own, and do not reflect the views of any wrestling organization or any of the six billion residents of Earth. This is how I see it as a fan in the crowd and my tastes may differ from other people.
I've been wanting to get down and watch a GCW show when it made its way into Mt. Vernon, since family lives there and I generally do not travel long distance to shows cause I've seeing too many of them as it is. It always seemed there were conflicts between this show and something else locally. Well this time around, there was a local show to see, but given that the parents moved there recently I needed to get back down there to check on things. So it was time to check out GCW.
The place where it was held used to be a grade school. It was converted into a YMCA. The gym didn't look to be all that big. It was big enough for a basketball court but there looked to be no room for seating to watch games. They set up the ring toward one side with the backstage area and seats were put on three sides of the ring. Did not look to be a big crowd, just over 60 people were there, and I wondered if they flyered the town any. Someone in the audience was wearing a black mask and holding a WCW replica belt, which I found out later it's someone who wants to train to be a wrestler but hasn't hit the age minimum to train. The poster they had up at the YMCA said "If it ain't GCW, it ain't wrestling." Ummm...that will get disputed.
Live from the YMCA in Mt. Vernon, IL. Your ring announcer is Shorty Biggs, who's outta action from wrestling due to a damaged leg. He runs through the lineup and preps the crowd.
Jackal 150lbs. City of Midian vs. Outtkast 200lbs. Des Moines, IA - Jackal's entrance had him banging his head into one of the GCW signs. Geez, knock yourself out before the match even starts! Armbar Outtkast, reversals, Jackal springboard into a sunset flip is missed. Outtkast clothesline, thrust, Samoan drop gets two. Jackal flying headscissors...almost loses it! Outtkast hits some kind of drop for two. Outtkast tries a bow and arrow, releases and hits a drop kick to the back. Bearhug Outtkast, northern lights suplex, bearhug, northern lights, bearhug! Jackal hits a tornado DDT to get out, kneeling bulldog, enzuigiri Jackal gets two. Whip Jackal's springboard crossbody is caught, but he escapes and hits Sliced Bread #2 for a two count! Backside swinging DDT and here comes Cameron Cage trying to distract Outtkast. Texas cloverleaf by Outtkast and Cage is on the apron! Outtkast in his face and Jackal rolls him up for the three count. Oh bah.
WINNER: Jackal pin -> 7:20 mins. **¼
Cage wants to run his mouth on the mike, he mocks Outtkast saying if he can't beat Jackal he can't beat him. Geez, you CAUSED him to lose ya smart***! Shorty Biggs says it's Cage vs. Outtkast next month in Mt. Vernon.
Man vs. Woman
Super Castaldi 107pesos Encinada, Mexico vs. Rebecca Raze 128lbs. Jackson, MO - Every match Raze is in, it's man vs. woman cause there's no other females around. I ask WHICH Castaldi this is, one, two? How much is a peso in pounds by the way? Shorty Biggs doesn't seem to know. Waistlock takedown Castaldi, chokes and stomps the gal. Whip Raze with a flying headscissors, suplex gets one. Castaldi with a slam gets two. Armdrag, clothesline Raze gets two. Choke on the rope by Castaldi as I mock him for being a single guy...for the obvious reason. Turnbuckle ram, he kicks and chokes away but Raze rolls him up outta nowhere and pins him. Whadda idiot. Kinda wished it wasn't this short so I could see more of Raze.
WINNER: Rebecca Raze pin -> 3:30 mins. *½
And Castaldi acts like a sore loser and attacks Raze, FISHERMAN'S SUPLEX! He pulls his mask off! It's Mevlin Talent! And here comes Sadie Blaze and Jimmy Charisma to beat up a girl! They got no girlfriends either! Sean Vincent runs out with kendo stick to break it up...someone gets blasted with it! Sean trashes the three ganging up on a woman, and their attempt to damage their chances of winning the tag title tournament. He wants Charisma NOW! As pointed out by Patrick, DNS is supposed to face Trent Stone and Dan Walsh in ROUND TWO, not Raze & Vincent. So what is DNS doing going after Raze now? Stone & Walsh have a good chance of eliminating DNS, after I saw each of them wrestle tonight. By the way, it could be Jynx & Steven Kennedy in the final round if DNS makes it there. Be funny if DNS lost to Stone & Walsh for assuming they were gonna beat them.
Sean Vincent ???lbs. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada vs. Jimmy Charisma ???lbs. Southern Los Angeles - Lockup, Sean with a monkey flip, German suplex, flying clothesline gets two. Whip Vincent, trip on the rope, Jimmy chokes away, rope burn, snap mare, rear chinlock. Charisma with a yankdown by the shirt gets two. Slam Charisma, elbow, a stupid cover that only gets two. After a slop hit with knees, Talent attacks Vincent, but gets fended off. Crossbody from the second rope on Charisma gets two. Sean with a suplex, elbow, choke on the rope, turnbuckle ram, and headbutt to the groin! Charisma with an atomic drop and neckbreaker for two. Sadie Blaze tries to put the briefcase in play, Raze runs back out to thrawt him. Vincent with a Acid Drop, then try to set up a double team on Charisma as Vincent hoists him on the shoulders, Raze on the top rope but gets yanked down by Blaze. Charisma rolls him up and grabs the rope for the pin. He stole it! Okay match without the botched knee spot.
WINNER: Jimmy Charisma pin -> 7 mins. **¾
Jynx 163lbs. Sacramento, CA vs. "The Crocodile Kid" Dan Walsh 195lbs. St. Louis, MO - Well Walsh calls himself the New Deal here but I hold the sign that says "Where's the CROC?" So he gives me the croc gesture. Being the day after Veterans Day, I have to acknowledge that Walsh is a veteran himself having served in Iraq last year. Last time I saw Jynx he was wearing a mask. Jynx wants to say something on the mike, he congrats all the people from Normal, IL, then mocks Mt. Vernon for their team losing 40-10 or something. Biggs takes exception to Jynx insulting the fans and gives him a lecture on the mike. Walsh with an armwringer, and pinches him on the nose. Heh. Hammerlock Walsh, Jynx is screaming. Armbar Jynx, reverse, headlock takedown Walsh. They switch around, rollup gets one. Walsh teases Jynx, stomp, they go to the floor and Walsh throws Jynx into the sign! Jynx though trips Walsh into it himself, Jynx rams him into the rails. They're brawling to the BACK! Someone gets rammed into things but we can't see who. They come back out and Jynx is thrown in, Walsh whip, Jynx gets slammed for two. Suplex attempt is blocked, Jynx suplex gets two. Uppercut Jynx, leg sweep into a gut buster by Walsh, senton, springboard senton...that looked like it may have not connected but Walsh gets two. Walsh up, boot is blocked, ref misses the LOW BLOW for two. RAKE! Jynx with a cobra clutch, then another rake! Jynx tries to finish with a Diamond Cutter, but Walsh hits SOMETHING that looked like a Samoan drop...but messed it up (unless it was some new move I've never seen before)...still gets the pin. Botched finish marred what a decent match.
WINNER: "The New Deal" Dan Walsh pin -> 8:30 mins. **½
Trent Stone 225lbs. St. Peters, MO vs. Kevin X 220lbs. St. Louis, MO - Well Kevin X has a scrolling message sign on his belt that says he's gonna be the next heavyweight champion. Well he's built all right, but so is Stone. Stone says during halftime that he's gonna have a good match. Lockup...and it's even, so they test their strength. Kevin comes up with a hammerlock, Stone hits the opening trio and Kevin bails out. But he hits a neck snap, springboard clothesline that hits Stone in the head for two. Powerslam Kevin for two, and he chokes Stone in frustration. Whip reverse shoulderblock Stone has no effect. So he does a standing spinning neckbreaker for two. Side suplex Stone gets two. Kevin reverses a whip to the corner and Stone crashes HARD. German suplex Kevin gets two. Kevin with elbows to the back, splash on the back gets two. X with the choke, forearm shots, a stumble off a whip, but recovers with a short-arm clothesline, spinebuster for two. Rear chinlock X, choke on the rope, choke with the boot, snap suplex gets two. Shoulderblocks in the corner by X and does a stupid one foot cover that won't beat anyone for ONE. X with a slam...and he does the Ronnie Garvin Stomp! Hadn't seen that in years! X goes showing off instead of covering and Stone is UP! Powerslam by Stone! X dodges a charge though and SUPERKICKS Stone down for two! Flatliner attempt is blocked, Stone tries I think for an F5, but Stone hits the SPEAR for two! Powerslam gets two. But Kevin X hits the flatliner and gets two. Flatliner again and the ref STOPS counting at two...ref claims time is up...TIME IS UP? THERE'S THIRTY SECONDS LEFT!!! WTF??? X argues with the ref, and the bell actually rings at the 15 minute mark.
NO WINNER: Time Limit Draw -> 14:30 mins.
Oh I'm not gonna accept this one, I chant for FIVE MORE MINUTES! Shorty Biggs gets the message and goes back for approval. He comes back out and it's approved, TIME EXTENDED. Kevin X goads Stone, and Stone hits a SPEAR!!! X bails out, Stone after him and it's a fight on the floor! Four minutes left, toss in. Stone to the top, he misses the dive, X with the Texas Cloverleaf! Stone powers out, elbow to the back by X gets two. Three minutes left! Stone is put on the top rope, they both fight up there, Kevin X with a FLATLINER FROM THE TOP ROPE! Decisive finish, thank you. Kevin X hits a SUPERKICK on Stone on his way out. Dan Walsh comes out to check on his partner.
WINNER: Kevin X pin -> 17:30 mins. ***½
GCW Light Heavyweight Championship
(c)Dingo 185lbs. Melbourne, Australia vs. Spoiled Steven Kennedy 190lbs. Hyannis Port, MA - It's been a long time since I've seen SSK, changed his hair style to long and braided. SSK stalls to start, Dingo spins him around and hits an armdrag. SSK drags him back, suplex gets one. Armwringer, knees by SSK, a spring over and rollup gets one. Victory roll Dingo gets two. Wheelbarrow armdrag Dingo, but SSK with a rake. Dingo spinebuster gets two. Dingo chops away, wheelbarrow, SSK manages to drop him on the top rope and then hit the X-Factor for two. German suplex Dingo gets two. Toss over SSK, SSK grabs an armbar through the ropes, Dingo climbs back in and proceeds to armbar SSK on EACH ROPE. SSK scissors Dingo the floor however, and goes down to chop him. He kicks Dingo into the rail, CROTCH into the POST, rail ram...he tries for a piledriver on the bare floor, but Dingo Russian leg sweeps him into the post! Dingo chops SSK on the rails LOUDLY! SSK goes back in, grabs Dingo and suplexes him in for two. Northern lights suplex SSK, chokes and wants the crowd to give him a "Kennedy" chant. I'm wondering when he's gonna do some of the Ken Kennedy mannerisms? Be kinda funny actually. SSK with a running knee to the corner gets two. SSK chokes with the boot, but Dingo slugs him off. Dingo goes up, SSK shoves the ref into the ropes to knock him down and crotch himself. After an unsuccessful attempt at a superplex, Dingo hops over SSK and gives him the Razors Edge for two! SSK hits him low, and hits a springboard moonsault on a bent over Dingo! Yowch. Slugfest ensues, they try moves on each other but they're blocked, sunset flip and dropkick by Dingo. Dingo finishes with a fisherman's suplex for three! Yep good match.
WINNER and STILL CHAMP: Dingo pin -> 13:30 mins. ***¾
Shorty Biggs comes out wearing a Viking helmet.
GCW Heavyweight Championship
(c)Cameron Cage w/ Sindy 222lbs. Las Vegas, NV vs. "Old School Warrior" Chaz Wesson 220lbs. Mt. Vernon, IL - Well we have a wrestler actually from Mt. Vernon here. Sindy is QUITE unattractive, the hair and outfit just turn me off. And she runs her mouth on the mike, though I can't tell what it is she's babbling about. Armbars traded, Cage with a knee to the gut. Chaz hits a clothesline to the corner. Cage rolls out, then gets slingshotted back in, dropkick gets one. Back body drop Chaz gets two. Chaz dumps him out, chops him on the floor, then tries to chop him against the sign and Chaz hurts his hand. Ouch. Cage goes after that arm, Wesson scissors the head of Cage, but Cage keeps working the arm and gets rolled for two. Cage keeps on the arm, whip back body drop gets two. Cage tosses him to the apron, Chaz with a crossbody from the top rope for two. Knee to the arm, chops Chaz and clotheslines him over the top. Cage is hanging on the rope and being rocked with punches and finally tumbles to the floor. Choke on the floor by Chaz, ram in the rail, more chops...and very loud ones! Toss in, top rope crossbody gets two. Wesson with an ab stretch, turns it into a rollup for two. Cage goes back after the arm, torques and knees it, rams him in the corner, chops. Cage whip reverse Chaz powerslams him for two. Chaz hits a high knee and Sindy has a chair, chair put in a corner, now she gets in the ring! Cage has a chair and nails Chaz with it, and nails the referee as well! Sheesh, what a moron.
WINNER: Chaz Wesson DQ -> 13:35 mins. ***¼
And Cage sets up the chair as if he is gonna Pillmanize the hand of Chaz! Well Outtkast runs out here to prevent that and Cage runs off! Chaz was ripped off. Didn't think the title was gonna change here anyway though.
The Verdict: The good stuff didn't come until the second half as the first half was quite average though there were some blown spots. If GCW does a show a bit more to the north I may make another one, but with all the feds that are closer to me that's gonna be tricky. Would like to see a bit more, heck send talent to one of the central Illinois groups!
Gonna go thumbs up.
